Do you consider your photography art or just photography? Recently I read an article on a blog I visit often

Edward Mendes wrote about this subject matter here ( http://www.edwardmendesphotography.com/blog/?p=216 ) and its something I guess we ask ourselves from time to time in the same vein as being a professional or an amateur photographer/artist. While the term Artist has been reserved for those that either produce painted works or sculpture pieces do we as photographers professional or amateur consider ourselves artists?

While I consider my photography art others may not, I believe the term “Art” lies in the eyes of the beholder as I have seen many “Art” pieces I thought looked like twisted pieces of junk metal or paint just splattered all over a canvas. Do you need a “Art Degree” to understand what art is or can you find art in something you like regardless of what the next person thinks?

Edward makes a good point about the work and vision photographers put in their craft both on location and in post production, is that not the same as a Artist that see’s a scene either in nature or in their mind and then recreates it using paints of other materials like wood, iron or stone. Or is art a product of somesone’s passion to bring to others that same thing they see or hear as a vision first then bring to life via their chosen art filed, painting, acting, making music or taking a photograph? or maybe Art is more the intent to produce something rather than document something, we can all take a photo to document a location, while some will try and produce art through their knowledge and skills learnt.

What are your thoughts when one person takes a photograph then just sends off the raw file image to a 3rd party for post production, receiving the finished product back from someone that was never at the scene to understand the light, colours at the time ?

What are your thoughts, I would be interested to read them ?

Here is photograph/piece of Art from the Southwest Of Western Australia.

A view from the beach not far from where I live. Taken a few nights back. We have been experiencing some rather nice sunsets and sunrises in the past week as we do at this time of year before the winds dry out in the height of summer and we are let with less that reasonable sunsets.

I usually have a lot of trouble producing images from a beach scene as stitched images, especially when there is little or no dominant factors in the image to pull the images together, but this time it seemed to work flawlessly, must be the texture in the clouds that helped as this was a 3 image stitch that lined up perfectly first go.

This image will be made available as a Fine Art Print in the “Open Edition” section of Spoolphotography.com in the coming weeks.

If you would like to purchase a fine art print of “Indian Ocean Beach” before then please contact myself through the contact form listed on the site. This image will be made available in sizes ranging from 12 inches long through to 75 inches long, as well as any custom size you wish. I think this image would be best printed on a hi gloss media like Fuji Flex.

Well it has been some time since my last post. In this time I have been working on my “Open Edition Landscape Panoramic Images” as well as looking through over 2000 images taken on a 10 day trek through Western Australia’s Great Southern Region.

In those 10 days I visited the Stirling Ranges, Esperance and Cape Le Grand as well as a couple of days in Albany and a night in Pemberton.

While most of my trip was spent down around the Esperance region I did manage to capture a few nice images that I will be showing on this blog of Albany, the Stirling Ranges and Pemberton. While I did get some nice light quite a few days where no god for shooting because of either harsh light, calm burn offs or too many hours driving between locations. Because of this I will be revisiting the Pemberton, Stirling Ranges region of Western Australia in the coming weeks, so be on the look out for those images.

First up is a coule of images from the recent trip. One of the stirling ranges and one of an amazing Esperance sunset on the beach. Both of these images will be made available for sale via the “Open Edition” section of the website in the coming weeks. If you would like to purchase either of these images before they go live on the website, please just shoot me an email via the contact page on Spoolphotography.com and I will respond within 24hrs with sizes and prices.

Cheers

With all the nice light around currently due to the warm humid weather, give me New Orleans/ Cairns weather everyday of the week, I have been out a fair bit shooting a variety of locations this past week or so.

One of the locations I have shot recently was 3 or 4 beaches around Perth with varying results. Some shot during the day to capture those stunning wispy white clouds and turquoise waters and others taken at or before dawn or sunsets.

Heres a little image taken during one of those golden sunsets we had last week here in Perth, Western Australia.
