While I have seen hundreds of images from Mono Lake and I took hundreds as well with the few hours I had there as well most I find have a similar tone unless shot in winter. I remember taking this well past sunset when a majority of the crowds had left for the day. With just a few photographers scattered around the shoreline we pretty much had the place to ourselves bar the howling coyotes in the distance.

I had taken several images before this series of images and was still looking for the right angle and time for the perfect shot. Mono Lake itself is a huge area and lies below sea level so the water is very salty and only really home to brine shrimp, flies and migratory birds that come to feed on the flies and shrimp ( yuk )

I am looking to having this printed at around 60-65 inches and mounted for my own home, maybe in my study or lounge …

The image can be printed up to around 70 inches in length and is available through the website page here : Mono Lake ….

Recently I received an email in my inbox from a Michael Frye. At first I was like this must be a error, then after reading through the email I read that it was the Michael Frye one of the photographers I follow and live vicariously through the amazing places they visit and the stunning photography they produce. I have all of Michaels books, ebooks and apps you name it I have it.

Around 18 months ago I sent Michael a photograph I had taken asking for his critique my work. To be honest I had completely forgotten about this after a few weeks as I thought it was a long shot my photograph would get chosen as he must get 100′s of requests if not more asking for his expert opinion. Well last week I found out why I had not heard back from Michael by Michael asking if he could use my image for a blog post of his own called “Rejects From the Critique Pool” which I found out would not only be used on his site but also run on the blog version of the Outdoor Photography magazine US version.

I’d like to thank Michael for choosing my photograph for his reject pool, it was a nice surprise and a great idea for a blog post I’m honored to be included along with the other stunning images he has chosen for the blog post …

Michael Frye - “Rejects From the Critique Pool”

and the reposting of Michaels blog post at Outdoor Photography Magazine

If you are not familiar with the work of Michael Frye please check his portfolio out

Michael Frye is a professional photographer specializing in landscapes and nature. He is the author and photographer of The Photographer’s Guide to Yosemite, Yosemite Meditations, and Digital Landscape Photography: In the Footsteps of Ansel Adams and the Great Masters, plus the eBook Light & Land: Landscapes in the Digital Darkroom. He has written numerous magazine articles on the art and technique of photography, and his images have been published in over thirty countries around the world. Michael has lived either in or near Yosemite National Park since 1983, currently residing just outside the park in Mariposa, California.

Oh yeah the photograph I almost forgot the photography … LOL …

While on a flying 3 day trip to Western Australia’s southern coastline I stopped by the Stirling Ranges on the way back home … With fast moving clouds and some nice soft light between showers I managed to capture this landscape image of one the most stunning areas in Western Australia, the Stirling Ranges …

The stirling Ranges are a series of very old mountains dating back over 600 millions years that lie around 340km’s southwest of Perth the capital of Western Australia …

Next up for the blog should be a few new australian landscape photographs from the state of Victoria … Till then enjoy my latest panoramic image of the Stirling Ranges, Western Australia ….

Well it is that time of year although when the outback of Western Australia comes alive with the colours of our wildflowers. Although very brief before our scoring summer sun takes over the wild flower season brings visitors both local, interstate and from around the the world. This passed weekend I ventured out for a couple of nights with fellow photographer Mark Stothard to see if we could capture some colour. One of the first images I have so far ready is this image of the morning light bring out the amazing colours of pale yellow and pink wild flowers just off the side of the great Northern Hwy near Paynes Find. I am not sure the names of the wildflowers we saw other than they are all WA wildflower everlastings and when in full bloom is quite a sight to see in the Western Australian bush.

Bouncing around the top of the gorges one evening watching the light changing and clouds moving in and out of frames I had to settle on location before it all went south. While there was somewhat better clouds behind me I thought the landscape scene lacked a natural glow from the light and thus looked a little flat with so I shot this view from a ridge point vantage point as my primary focus as an overview of the land inside Karijini National Park.

Do you consider your photography art or just photography? Recently I read an article on a blog I visit often

Edward Mendes wrote about this subject matter here ( http://www.edwardmendesphotography.com/blog/?p=216 ) and its something I guess we ask ourselves from time to time in the same vein as being a professional or an amateur photographer/artist. While the term Artist has been reserved for those that either produce painted works or sculpture pieces do we as photographers professional or amateur consider ourselves artists?

While I consider my photography art others may not, I believe the term “Art” lies in the eyes of the beholder as I have seen many “Art” pieces I thought looked like twisted pieces of junk metal or paint just splattered all over a canvas. Do you need a “Art Degree” to understand what art is or can you find art in something you like regardless of what the next person thinks?

Edward makes a good point about the work and vision photographers put in their craft both on location and in post production, is that not the same as a Artist that see’s a scene either in nature or in their mind and then recreates it using paints of other materials like wood, iron or stone. Or is art a product of somesone’s passion to bring to others that same thing they see or hear as a vision first then bring to life via their chosen art filed, painting, acting, making music or taking a photograph? or maybe Art is more the intent to produce something rather than document something, we can all take a photo to document a location, while some will try and produce art through their knowledge and skills learnt.

What are your thoughts when one person takes a photograph then just sends off the raw file image to a 3rd party for post production, receiving the finished product back from someone that was never at the scene to understand the light, colours at the time ?

What are your thoughts, I would be interested to read them ?

Here is photograph/piece of Art from the Southwest Of Western Australia.

This image was taken last winter on a very cold and dark morning. Waiting for the sun to rise I was hoping the sun would provide the right light between the 2 large rock plateaus and the 3 sisters.

I was rewarded for the cold early start with a stunning sunrise over one of Australia’s Iconic National Landmarks. The 3 Sisters At The Blue Mountains.

Dawn over San Francisco is a special time. With the sun coming up over the Eastern Sierra’s, the sky and mountain tops take on a magnificent glow. With the lights still burning in the city and bay added by the ever present fog rolling in off the Pacific Ocean, watching a sunrise from the Marin Headlands over the Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco is a memory I’ll never forget.

In this image I tried to not capture too much of the sky for reason being I think it detracts from the city still being in darkness with the lights still lighting up the bay, plus the glow was way too much to handle while still allowing the city lights to shine through on Camera, for the human eye this is not a problem but for camera exposure proposes it still is.

Shot at 200mm with 4 separate images stitched to form one large hi resolution image capable of being printed to 90 or more inches without quality being compromised. The detail in the city and across the Golden Gate Bridge and Bay Bridge is stunning.

One of my favorite times to photograph San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge is after sunset. The reason I like this time of day/evening to photograph the Golden Gate Bridge is because of the lights. The lights of the city light up the bay and the bridge takes on a more prominent feature during this time. Not that it needs to be any more prominent that it already is, its just after dark for me I think it comes alive and really shines.

If you would like to purchase a fine art print of “The Golden Gate Bridge After Dark” before then please contact myself through the contact form listed on the site. This image will be made available in sizes ranging from 12 inches long through to 90 inches long, as well as any custom size you wish. I think this image would lend itself to both a gloss media like Fuji Flex and/or Cotton Rag Photographic Paper. Both look amazing printed on these finishes as large as possible.
