A Winters Sunrise

First up thanks once again to all those nice people that have purchased a print from myself over the last month, its folks like you that keep this site alive and enable me to venture out and capture those moments we are sometimes in our busy lives just too busy to see.

My next up to blog is a simple image I took in the winter of 2010 between winter storms along the southern coastline of Western Australia. I chose a square composition for this shot as i had taken plenty of panoramics of the area and was looking for a more intimate shot of the location …

Now available on the website “A Winters Sunrise” in many sizes or email/call me for your custom size requirement …

Mono Lake California

While I have seen hundreds of images from Mono Lake and I took hundreds as well with the few hours I had there as well most I find have a similar tone unless shot in winter. I remember taking this well past sunset when a majority of the crowds had left for the day. With just a few photographers scattered around the shoreline we pretty much had the place to ourselves bar the howling coyotes in the distance.

I had taken several images before this series of images and was still looking for the right angle and time for the perfect shot. Mono Lake itself is a huge area and lies below sea level so the water is very salty and only really home to brine shrimp, flies and migratory birds that come to feed on the flies and shrimp ( yuk )

I am looking to having this printed at around 60-65 inches and mounted for my own home, maybe in my study or lounge …

The image can be printed up to around 70 inches in length and is available through the website page here : Mono Lake ….

Queensland Beautiful One Day Perfect The Next

Not much wrong with that saying. While I have visited Queensland many many times over the past 20 or so years it only has been in recent years I have taken my time and look at the photography before the vacation aspect of a Queensland break.

This was taken one evening on the way back from visiting a few waterfalls during the day and while the days shooting was not very good due to poor light, the evening was more of a success … A sunset overlooking the Australian Bush looking over towards the Pacific Ocean …

Lake Tahoe

Scouring over some old files to find something that could work with a tone that caught my attention earlier today. I am not sure how to describe it other than to say for me it looks like a silvery chocolate … Finding that right combination took a little time but after processing the image in color first then going to the black and white stage. Only after I was happy with the final black and white image did I start looking at colors that could match the tone I was looking for … Silvery Chocolate … Yeah I know not very technical, but thats what I get for the tone …

Enjoy …

Waterfalls In Tasmania

While I guess there would be 1000′s upon 1000′s of waterfalls in Tasmania on my last visit I was able to photograph just a couple and really only one with decent conditions. The small falls at the back of a short hike through and past another more photographed falls. Tasmania has some of the best landscape scenery for photography in Australia. I loved the diversity that was presented at every turn

I took several different perspectives view of these falls but I think I like this one the most. While the water was more than kind of cold it was freezing being the end of winter, one had to get in for the right point of view. This image has taken some time to finish as I have been stuck on a couple of things about this image for some time … I think I can safely say I have completed this image … next :)

Thanks to all those that are now reading this blog … we have jumped considerably in traffic numbers to around 350-500 per day … Once again thanks for your support … cheers Neal

Here is a recent image taken from the top of a waterfall looking down … Quite and interesting point of view and one I very much like …

Spool Photography Gets A Fresh New Look

With many hours spent drafting and planning the latest update it is with great relief to finally have the vision I had of the site around 12 months ago finally come to life.

Earlier today we went live with the final updates to the site and I must say the guys and in particular Dave from Clever Starfish have done an amazing job once again. With a cleaner look, faster loading times and bigger brighter sample size images as well as a total revamp of the popular “In Your Home” feature the site looks amazing.

Over the past few months I have gone over every image in my portfolio and prepared the very best sample files for the website one can do. The samples are larger, clearer and brighter giving you the best idea via a website display of what the final print will look like.

The final print in your home will always outshine anything that can be represented on a website and the limitations of website browsers etc. The current sample files provided on this site are the best one will see …

Photography, Art or just a photo?

Do you consider your photography art or just photography? Recently I read an article on a blog I visit often

Edward Mendes wrote about this subject matter here ( http://www.edwardmendesphotography.com/blog/?p=216 ) and its something I guess we ask ourselves from time to time in the same vein as being a professional or an amateur photographer/artist. While the term Artist has been reserved for those that either produce painted works or sculpture pieces do we as photographers professional or amateur consider ourselves artists?

While I consider my photography art others may not, I believe the term “Art” lies in the eyes of the beholder as I have seen many “Art” pieces I thought looked like twisted pieces of junk metal or paint just splattered all over a canvas. Do you need a “Art Degree” to understand what art is or can you find art in something you like regardless of what the next person thinks?

Edward makes a good point about the work and vision photographers put in their craft both on location and in post production, is that not the same as a Artist that see’s a scene either in nature or in their mind and then recreates it using paints of other materials like wood, iron or stone. Or is art a product of somesone’s passion to bring to others that same thing they see or hear as a vision first then bring to life via their chosen art filed, painting, acting, making music or taking a photograph? or maybe Art is more the intent to produce something rather than document something, we can all take a photo to document a location, while some will try and produce art through their knowledge and skills learnt.

What are your thoughts when one person takes a photograph then just sends off the raw file image to a 3rd party for post production, receiving the finished product back from someone that was never at the scene to understand the light, colours at the time ?

What are your thoughts, I would be interested to read them ?
