Stirling Ranges Western Australia

While on a flying 3 day trip to Western Australia’s southern coastline I stopped by the Stirling Ranges on the way back home … With fast moving clouds and some nice soft light between showers I managed to capture this landscape image of one the most stunning areas in Western Australia, the Stirling Ranges …

The stirling Ranges are a series of very old mountains dating back over 600 millions years that lie around 340km’s southwest of Perth the capital of Western Australia …

Next up for the blog should be a few new australian landscape photographs from the state of Victoria … Till then enjoy my latest panoramic image of the Stirling Ranges, Western Australia ….

Western Australian Wild Flowers

While out and about last weekend looking over countless flowers one can become ( well me anyway ) totally confused with how to photograph these flowers. Now no one does anything completely without relying somewhat on what they have seen heard or felt as inspiration, and for the life of me I was going through countless files in my head on how to shot photograph these flowers with some sort of new approach to a degree …

Lucky for me just a week before I was shooting I saw an image of a photographer “Jon Paul” (one of my favorites) who has a amazing gallery in the USA. His use of in camera movement experimentation at a location in Lake Tahoe I thought needed none but somehow his interpretation was just perfect. WHile I am no way saying this picture of mine is perfect, it does somehow some up how I felt looking at these flowers by the end of the weekend … Now not a complete in camera movement image as there is actually 3 images here plus a 3 image stitch for size and resolution purposes … But you get the idea ….

West Australian Wildflowers

Well it is that time of year although when the outback of Western Australia comes alive with the colours of our wildflowers. Although very brief before our scoring summer sun takes over the wild flower season brings visitors both local, interstate and from around the the world. This passed weekend I ventured out for a couple of nights with fellow photographer Mark Stothard to see if we could capture some colour. One of the first images I have so far ready is this image of the morning light bring out the amazing colours of pale yellow and pink wild flowers just off the side of the great Northern Hwy near Paynes Find. I am not sure the names of the wildflowers we saw other than they are all WA wildflower everlastings and when in full bloom is quite a sight to see in the Western Australian bush.

Yallingup Reef

Spent the weekend down south around Dunsborough and met up with mr Mark “True North” Stothard for a shoot Saturday evening and again on Sunday morning … Well we will not talk about Sunday morning as the light was some of the worst there could have been. But saturday night was a little different. What promised to be an inspiring sunset ended up being good without being spectacular.

I have always liked the art by Michael R Nelson and I remember seeing his work for the first time round 1988 on my first trip to Hawaii. It was always a trip to see his paintings of marine life and the landscape in the same frame from water level, with the colors where so rich. While I was scoring over the tidal pools at Yallingup looking for a composition or two, his work came to mind, which lead me to look more at what was just a few feet from me and to see if I could use that with the sky … So I guess this australian landscape photography is inspired by a hawaiian painter …

It is always fun and exhilarating to get out there and challenge what you want to see but end up seeing as the light and conditions change, with the result sometimes and appreciation of the time spent not fully apparent till well after the time has passed …

Sand Dunes Western Australia

Well it has been sometime since my last post. In reality I have not really had anything I thought was worth a posting and life has been busy in the real world so the cyber world suffered. But situations are always evolving and recently I have manage to get out on few shoots and now have a few new images of some Australian landscapes that I can share through the blog.

First up is a shot taken a week or so ago spending the night up at some dunes with Mark Stohard. An interesting shoot as we shot both dusk and dawn to very different colours and conditions. With the aftermath of a heavy storm on the friday night it was somewhat calm and still at the dunes. This image is a series of images blended together for colour and resolution. Having produced a few square images in the last 12 months and as I see them printed and framed I become more and more inclined to produce more.

I recently printed, framed and sold a square image from Esperance. After final inspection before delivery to the client I found myself standing back and thinking wow, thats mine and its square what is going on ? …. The final print was a image taken of Lucky Bay Esperance. An image not to dissimilar from this dune shot in tone and simplicity, so I can see myself looking more and more for opportunities to produce square landscape prints

An Overview of Karijini National Park

Bouncing around the top of the gorges one evening watching the light changing and clouds moving in and out of frames I had to settle on location before it all went south. While there was somewhat better clouds behind me I thought the landscape scene lacked a natural glow from the light and thus looked a little flat with so I shot this view from a ridge point vantage point as my primary focus as an overview of the land inside Karijini National Park.

Hamersley Gorge

Well I am just back last evening from an amazing five days inside Karijini National Park … This time I flew up to Port Hedland instead of the 16hr drive each way to save some time … But maybe next time I would not fly into Port Hedland, it is still quite a drive to Karijini National Park from there …

While inside Karijini National Park I experienced all four seasons. With heavy rain overnight to misty showers for a full morning providing a great opportunity to photograph in overcast conditions, perfect blue skies with amazing clouds on another day to a cool morning and some very warm afternoons with thunderstorms brewing and the odd lightning show thrown in each evening, it was all on show and I lapped up every opportunity presented.

Hamersely Gorge was one of the gorges I never had the chance to visit in 2010 so this time round it was a must visit spot, regardless of distance, I wanted to see it … And I am so glad I did. Hamersley would be my favourite gorge to photograph. I love the beauty of the smooth water curve stone that surrounds the gorge it reminded myself of the erosion one sees inside the subway canyon inside the USA. Photographing the gorge for a few hours trying to capture as much as I could up an down the gorge spending sunset on the top of the gorge looking over over the Hamersley Ranges (images to come) ….

This particular image was taken inside the Hamersley Gorge and the first of a series I will be posting for Karijini National Park over the next few weeks … With many files and I think there could have quite a few quite nice landscape images from this stunning location in Western Australia’s North.

Four New Release Landscape Prints

Just finished loading up 4 new Landscape prints to the site. 3 Western Australian Landscapes and 1 Victorian Landscape.

First up are 2 very recent photos taken from the South West of Western Australia in the Cape Naturaliste area.

Both show the pristine beaches that lie in the south west and the amazing relaxed atmosphere that surrounds the area.

Karijini National Park

Over the past month I have been lucky enough to visit several of Australia’s most stunning locations. From the deep south of the state of Victoria along the Great Ocean Road and the 12 Apostles, up through Great Otway National Park with its spectacular waterfalls and ancient forests and through the Alpine region of Mt Buffalo, Mt Beauty, Bright and Falls Creek, the state of Victoria has a diversity and beauty second to none.

But my first stop over the past month was none other than my home state, yet a 15 hour drive through to its red center and the spectacular region of Karijini National Park. If you are not sure where Karijini lies it is around 60km’s from Tom Price in a easterly direction, Tom Price being one of Australia’s largest mining areas.

Karijini is like nothing I have ever seen. The landscapes are dry, hot, rough and red, very red. But there lies an unspoiled charm to the area, from its dusty gravel roads to its deep gorges with cool refreshing pools and gum trees that sway in the hot year round climate. it is an unforgiving place but a place I loved to photograph for the first time.
